Overview of stellar network VSAT communication


The star network satellite system is a bidirectional, IP satellite access network with a generally star topology. The system combines broadband output data channels and high-speed feedback channels and can operate on the relay resources of any fixed-orbit satellite. The network efficiency and data rate support provided far exceed those of other systems.


The outbound satellite channel at the center of the system is based on the DVB-S or DVB-S2 open standard technology. The most innovative technology of DVB-S2 includes the advanced LDPC (low density parity check) coding method. It's ultra-low Eb/No threshold approaches the Shannon theory limit, and together with 8PSK and 16APSK modulation, the outbound channel can save up to 30% of bandwidth compared to traditional methods. The latest ACM (Adaptive Coding and Modulation) technology compensates for the effects of rain fade, and improves effective data flow. On the basis of the MF-TDMA multi-frequency time-division multiple access technology, the DLA (Dynamic Link Adaptation) function on the feedback link reduces the satellite bandwidth of approximately 20%.

Center station


  • Satellite channel system (4.5 meters or more antennas, high-power amplifiers, DVB outbound baseband systems, feedback channel baseband systems, etc.);

  • Network management system (NMS);

  • Network Control Center (NCC).


Remote small stations


  • Small caliber communication antennas (1.2 meters to 2.4 meters);

  • BUC and high-frequency heads;

  • TDMA small station indoor unit.


Characteristics of stellar network VSAT communication


  • It supports data rates up to 126 Mbps for outbound traffic from the main station to the small station;

  • The uplink data rate from the small station to the main station can reach 4.2 Mbps;

  • The network can be upgraded via software to the standard satellite feedback channel (DVB-RCS);

  • It supports multi-star/multi-relay configurations;

  • The compact main station is suitable for smaller, more economical networks;

  • Star/mesh hybrid networks provide flexibility for a variety of applications in a single network.
