Satellite Terminal Overview


In the mobile satellite communication system, the user segment needs to access the mobile satellite communication network through the ground segment for mobile communication. The communication terminal representing the user segment can have different forms, such as a handheld terminal or vehicle terminal. The function of the user terminal is to set and obtain the communication status of the end-user by installing a wireless transceiver antenna to complete the communication. For mobile satellite communication networks with different frequency bands, one embodiment is that user terminals use different frequencies. User terminals that use different frequency bands for communication have different communication functions and design methods.


A mobile satellite communication system consists of three parts: the space segment, ground segment, and user segment. The space segment is the satellite transponder, and the ground segment includes the ground master station, network control center, and satellite control center. The ground master station is also called the gateway station or gateway station, which is responsible for the transfer of the shared telephone switching network, cellular communication network, and mobile satellite communication network. User segment includes mobile terminal and handheld terminal. The following figure shows the network structure of the mobile satellite communication system.


The Application of Satellite Terminal


Mobile satellite communication systems can be divided into maritime mobile satellite systems (MMSs), aeronautical mobile satellite systems (AMSS), and land mobile satellite systems (less) according to their applications.


MMS aims to help maritime rescue work, improve the efficiency and management level of ships, improve maritime communication services and improve wireless positioning capabilities. Its applications in maritime affairs include direct-dial telephone, fax, e-mail, and data connection.


The main purpose of AMSS is to provide voice and data communication between aircraft and the ground for crew and passengers. Its applications in aviation include cockpit voice, data, automatic position, and status report, passenger direct dial telephone, etc.


The main purpose of loss is for mobile users on land. The main users are vehicles running on land. In addition, it provides services to areas that cannot be covered by the current terrestrial cellular mobile communication. Especially for countries with vast territory, mountains, and deserts, it has been widely used internationally with its unique advantages such as wide communication coverage. Its applications on land include microsatellite telephone, fax, two-way communication on data and transmission, location report, e-mail, and fleet management.


The size, weight, and power consumption of mobile terminal equipment are limited, and the size and shape of the antenna are limited by the installed carrier (such as aircraft, automobiles, ships, etc.), so the requirements of the handheld terminal are more stringent. The effective Omnidirectional radiation power EIRP of the mobile terminal is limited. The satellite transponder and onboard antenna in the space segment need to be specially designed, and multi-point beam technology and high-power technology are adopted to meet the requirements of the system.
